Safe acts audits behind improvement in Fort Worth safety performance

Improved team communication and the implementation of ‘Safe acts

audits’ resulted in the pump assembly team at the Fort Worth campus improving recordable injury performance in the second half of 2011. ‘Safe acts audits’ focus on observing

the employee for 15 minutes in their working environment and the behaviours the employee is demonstrating. The team leads and supervisors throughout the Fort Worth facility conduct these audits weekly, completing an average of 40 audits per week. The data is then communicated back to the supervisors to establish where additional behavioural training is required. Assembly lead Tim Ward says that the audits have helped show a dramatic improvement in the use of all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and the overall working behaviours of the team. Improved lifting posture, glove use, and

fork truck safety are all areas that have seen safety improvements. “The biggest contributor to safety performance is reinforcing safety at the beginning of every shift,” says Tim, “people today are more comfortable getting involved and stopping unsafe behaviours by their co-workers and visitors.” Through the daily shift start- up meetings, the supervisors, led by assembly production supervisor, Jeremy Bruenty, discuss safety topics in every meeting. From safety incidents occurring elsewhere in the plant, changes in safety procedures, or observations from the Safe acts audit process, there is constant reinforcement of the safety message. By focusing on safety in every meeting,

the overall awareness of safety and safe behaviours has steadily improved, particularly important given the large number of new employees added to the assembly ranks in 2011.

Q. What is the Weir EHS System? A. The Weir EHS System is made up of two parts. The fi rst is a set of Weir minimum EHS standards applicable across all operations within Weir globally. This underpins our Corporate Sustainability strategy as well as ensuring that we have a minimum level of mitigation regarding EHS risk. The key areas where global standards have been developed include management systems, behavioural safety, operational control of risk, supply chain, environment, fi re / catastrophe, environment themes and health and safety themes. In turn, there are sub-sections within each of these – for example within operational control
