A magnetic driven process pump at the Alrode facility

Collaboration attracts magnetic pumps to South African market

The combined expertise of Weir Minerals Africa and Weir Gabbioneta lies behind the first order for magnetic driven process pumps in the South African market. The heavy duty R-MAK magnetic

horizontal process pumps are being commissioned in a petrochemical application. The pumps, supplied by Weir Gabbioneta, have been built to the latest API 685 standards and adapted by Weir Minerals Africa to suit local refinery specifications. Magnetic driven pumps are known as the “seal-less” pump because there is no shaft

gland and the unit is driven by a magnetic field that exists between two banks of opposing magnets situated on either side of a stationary sealing can. Developments in materials, design and orientation have improved the efficiency of torque transmission, making the magnetic drive option more viable than ever. Weir Minerals Africa’s Craig Gelling says with a large presence established elsewhere in the world, it is important for these innovative pumps to enter the South African market. “The South African order will give impetus

to the local growth we anticipate with this leading product line. Among the real benefits associated with this kind of pump are zero emissions to the environment, no mechanical contact between the motor/gearbox and the pump, natural overload protection governed by the strength of the magnetic field strength and reduced wear and low heat generation.” The order also highlights the success of

the Group’s divisions in selling the full product range into all markets, “All Weir divisions support the oil sector in many ways — both upstream and downstream.” Gelling says.

PowerGen International proves a success for Weir Power & Industrial

Weir Power & Industrial division rounded off a successful year of exhibitions with

PowerGen International in the United States in December 2011.

The exhibition, which was held in the Weir Power & Industrial sales & marketing team members at PowerGen International 16

Las Vegas Convention Centre, provided an excellent opportunity to meet existing and new customers, as well as enabling US colleagues to view the new integrated exhibition booth design, which showcases the full divisional offering and was first launched earlier in the year at PowerGen Europe.
