East Midlands Airport Upgrades CEM AC2000

East Midlands Airport has upgraded to the latest version of CEM AC2000. It will be the first UK Airport to fully migrate to Picopass smart card technology, having used dual- technology Wiegand/Picopass cards through the migration process. Picopass technology provides high levels of encryption and is considered to be one of the most secure card technologies currently available, as well as offering sector storage on the card which can be used for other applications such as cashless vending, photocopy access, membership to clubs, etc, with each sector being secured individually so that it can be provided to Airport clients as required.

“The upgrade of the CEM AC2000 system and Picopass smart card technology is an important step for East Midlands Airport, bringing our system to the leading edge of airport security,” said Gary Simons, Security Technical Officer, East Midlands Airport. “The CEM AC2000 upgrade is vital to ensure that East Midlands Airport continues to run effectively and efficiently with the highest of security, and can successfully continue to grow and meet any future security requirements.”

University of Greenwich Scientists Launch buildingEXODUS

Scientists at the University of Greenwich have released the next generation of their evacuation and crowd simulation software, buildingEXODUS. The software, created by the university’s Fire Safety Engineering Group, is already one of the world’s leading design tools for simulating evacuations of people from buildings in both normal and emergency conditions. The latest release – known as Version 5.0 – has new capabilities that will enable building engineers to perform the most realistic desktop simulations that have ever been possible, predicting not only how individual people interact with each other and the built environment, but also how they can be debilitated by hazards such as heat, smoke and toxic gases. The university’s Fire Safety Engineering

Group is a world leader in computational fire engineering. It has unparalleled expertise in aircraft, building, ship and rail evacuation and fire modelling, with its team of experts undertaking a unique combination of leading- edge research, large-scale human factors trials and practical real world consultancy. Fire Safety Engineering Group’s projects

have included studies of the Airbus A380 superjumbo, the Sydney and Beijing Olympics, the World Trade Centre evacuation and the 7 July London bombings. The latest software, Version 5.0, draws extensively on data and experience captured from experiments and real-life incidents. Its human behaviour ‘submodel’ includes rules governing the often complex behaviour of people affected by smoke in fire situations and the use of signage in an emergency. It also examines the psychological aspects governing how, and why, people select an escalator or an adjacent staircase as their escape route. Since its launch in 1996, the buildingEXODUS package has been used by engineering consultancies, architects, research laboratories, regulatory authorities, police forces, fire brigades and universities in 37 countries. The package has also been used to model the evacuation capabilities of a wide range of proposed or existing buildings and crowd situations, from the Love Parade disaster analysis to the Beijing Olympics, and from the World Trade Centre investigation to the Statue of Liberty redevelopment.

Totalpost Partners with Astrophysics for Screening

Mailroom solutions specialist Totalpost Services plc has announced a new partnership with Astrophysics Inc. to bring the most advanced mail, freight and baggage X-ray screening systems into the UK. The new XIS series features cutting-edge software that can help detect a range of potential threats in several environments involving cargo inspections, mobile screening and letter or parcel scanning. This new technology offers high-speed letter, packet,

parcel, freight and baggage screening suitable to detect harmful substances such as white powder, blades, needles, weapons or explosives. The equipment also features a full range of multi-view and CT image manipulation tools to identify potential threats, whilst archiving up to 100,000 images at a time and offering a “test ability” to ensure proper recognition by the operator, which can also be enhanced by a remote service provider available to give an overview of a potential threat.

OptoScreener® Attains Standard 2 EU Certification

Optosecurity Inc. has announced that, following extensive testing by ECAC, its EU Certified Type C LEDS OptoScreener software upgrade for single-view X-ray machines has attained Standard 2 performance on Smiths 6040i host machines. This means that thousands of machines deployed across European airports can now be upgradeable to the highest level of Type C performance without the need to be replaced, change the layout of the checkpoints, or change electricity power consumption. Standard 2 is the highest level of detection in the current regulation, and was recently perceived as attainable only with multi-view or CT X-ray machines.
