Lombok International Airport Opens with Astrophysics Security Systems
The long awaited Lombok International Airport successfully opened on 1 October 2011. Located in Central Lombok, it is now the sole airport on the island, replacing the older Selaparang Airport, and currently has an average of 1.2 million airport passengers a year, with 500,000 of them tourists.
Lombok International Airport is currently using four Astrophysics XIS-
6545’s for checkpoint screening and two XIS-100XD’s for checked and over-sized baggage inspection.
Radiopaque Launches RadMark™
Radiopaque Solutions, Inc. has released the RadMark™ Airport Security Bin Identification System for general security use. The RadMark™ X-ray visible ID system is designed to reduce the time spent by TSA screeners and speed travellers through airport security checkpoints. The system, previously only available to federal government agencies, is now cleared for use in all security screening applications. The RadMark™ bin identification system is based upon a simple concept. If you can see it you can identify it. A uniquely identifiable, X-ray visible, tag is placed under the rim of each bin. The identification code on the radiopaque tag matches the identification label on the bin. The tag itself can also perform both functions. When the scanner operator selects a bin to be checked it is visually identified on the X-ray scanner screen by the ID number. The bin can then be easily segregated for further screening through visually matching the bin label. The system uses Radiopaque Solutions' proprietary radiopaque coating technology combined with LASER processing to create the unique identification system. The process is currently in use by the medical device industry to create X-ray visible products for use in surgical procedures. Radiopaque Solutions, Inc. has pioneered the development of innovative X-ray visible coating technology to produce a line of unique and distinctive X-ray visible products for use in the security, medical and inspection/calibration industries.
L-3 eXaminer® 3DX-ES Receives EU Standard 3 CEP Approval
L-3 Security & Detection Systems (SDS) has announced that its certified eXaminer® 3DX-ES explosives detection system (EDS) has passed the European Union Commission Regulation Standard 3 for EDS under the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Common Evaluation Process (CEP) of Security Equipment. The system was successfully tested by the Service Technique de l’Aviation Civile (STAC), the engineering department of France’s aviation regulatory agency.
Intergraph® Helps Zurich Police Consolidate Command and Control Centres
U.S. Air Force Orders 66 Astrophysics XIS-7858
The U. S. Air Force awarded Astrophysics Inc. a contract for 66 XIS-7858 X-ray inspection systems in September 2011. The systems will be installed at 15 bases domestically and 16 or more bases internationally for inspection of all carry-on and checked passenger baggage.
SITA to Reduce Check-in Queues in Kathmandu
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has signed a seven-year agreement with SITA to tackle check-in queues at the country’s main gateway, Tribhuvan International Airport, and to support its efforts to attract more tourists to the country. Long queues are a consequence of the lack of airline common-use facilities at the airport, which receives 85% of Nepal’s tourism traffic. With the introduction of SITA’s common-use platform AirportConnect Open, queues will be reduced and passenger flow through the airport will greatly improve because check-in areas can be used more efficiently. SITA AirportConnect Open is being implemented initially at 24 check- in counters, later expanding to 36.
February 2012 Aviationsecurityinternational
Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, General Manager, Tribhuvan International Airport, said: "We selected SITA after an extremely competitive international bidding process. This upgrade to our check-in facilities is timely as we have seen record levels of passenger traffic this year with the heavy promotion of Nepal Tourism Year. "And passenger numbers are expected to
grow further from now until April, the peak tourism period in Nepal. There was a real boom last year when international airlines serving the country grew their passenger volumes by over 20% and we hope this trend will continue."
The service department of the Zurich City Police Department, Zurich Protection & Rescue (Schutz & Rettung Zürich – SRZ), in partnership with Intergraph®, has completed the first milestone in consolidating its two command-and-control centres – ELZ Zurich and ELZ Airport – into one joint Prime Centre. The new control centre at Zurich Airport will contain 17 I/Dispatcher workstations, which can be supplemented in emergency situations by 14 I/Calltaker emergency workstations. The other existing ELZ Zurich control centre, which is already equipped with Intergraph software, will operate as a redundant alternate control centre when the new command-and-control centre is complete. Intergraph is leading the project, partnering
with Frequentis (radio system) and AVS (imaging system). Consolidation began in May 2011, with the first phase completed in September 2011.
The new command and control centre is scheduled to be fully operational in November 2012, and will perform all the functions previously performed at the two separate centres. These include accepting emergency calls for the fire department and emergency medical services, scheduling emergency resources, receiving alarms from hazard alert systems, mobilising and scheduling various on-call services and specialists, performing mandates outside the Canton, and coordinating with other agencies during major incidents.
