INDUSTRY NEWS Crown Casting Launching New Metalcasting Plant


Iron and bronze caster Crown Casting Industries recently announced plans to open a $16 million facility in Hodges, S.C. According to a statement issued by


South Carolina’s Coordinating Coun- cil for Economic Development, Crown Casting will serve broad commercial markets, as well as specialty niche markets like glass mold equipment. Te metalcasting facility is ex- pected to create 50 new jobs and be designed with lean manufacturing and environmental conservation in mind. Company officials said Crown Cast- ing intends to compete with foreign metalcasters for market share. “We are excited about our decision


to create jobs and invest in Greenwood County,” said George Bowyer, vice president of Crown Casting Industries. “[It] provided the best location for Crown Castings to grow in a highly competitive world market. Economic Development approved the company for a $100,000 grant for construction and job development credits, which will be available when hiring targets are met. On p. 23 of the January issue, you state the bullets shown were made of cast iron. Actually “balls” for both muskets and rifles, during the Revolu- tionary War, were cast from pure lead. Tey did not have bullet shapes but were round balls. Cannon balls were cast from iron.
