JULY 21-25, 2012

A LITTLE BACKGROUND Because Nevada’s economy was once tied to the mining industry and its inevitable ups and downs, the state found other means of economic support during the down times and earned the title “Sin City” because it hosted several legal brothels, illegal gambling and quick, easy divorces. Traffic to Nevada increased in the 1920s due to the state’s liberal residency laws, when unhappy husbands and wives made the trek to Reno for “Renovation,” i.e. an easy divorce. To accommodate this influx of visitors, hotels, dude ranches, casinos, bars and restaurants increased at an incredible rate. And that became the foundation for the state’s tourist industry.

Casino gambling was sanctioned by the state legislature in 1931 as a business move to protect and bolster the tourist trade during the Great Depression.

HOW LUCKY CAN YOU GET? Penny slots, poker, Black
