The Veterans Day dinner that night served 300 students, Army offi cers, VFW members and others, and the National Senior Vice-President was the event’s main speaker. She was then presented with a U.S. Army Command coin as a token to recognize her excellent service to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW. Next on the trip itinerary
were visits to three German cemeteries to observe the remembrances of departed family and friends of the German people, on their customary November Memorial Day. Wreath-laying ceremonies
were held to honor American veterans Ralph Bryan at Niederwerm Park, Gene Capek
in Schweinfurt Cemetery, and Roy and Irene Watson at the old Schweinfurt Cemetery. Later, Lemley attended a dedication of the Veterans and Soldiers Memorial under construction through the efforts of VFW Post 10658. Lemley, who was guest speaker for the ceremony, said the event was very touching. “It made me feel like we were doing a bit of good will between the two countries. The Germans were enemies at one time, but now we were united in honoring our veterans.” As the National Senior Vice-
President arrived at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Heidelberg, so, too, did injured soldiers being brought into the hospital on stretchers and wheelchairs from a transport. She met members of the hospital staff and visited patients in various stages of treatment. “So many wanted to visit,” she said, “including a soldier in
