ABRAHAM LINCOLN – A Shumway exclusive since 1923. Remarkably smooth and mild tast- ing, fruits weight up to 1 lb. Developed at our seed farms in Rockford, IL and named after Illinois greatest son. Extra large tomatoes, sometimes setting as many as 9 fruits in a cluster. This is the original Abraham Lincoln as it was back in the 1920’s.

Sow in flats 6 to 8 weeks prior to transplanting outdoors. Tomato seed will not germinate in cool soil. Be sure soil temperature is at least 75°F. Plant seed 1/4 in. deep. When plants are 1-1/2 in. high, transplant into Jiffy pots. Trans- plant outdoors 3 to 4 ft. apart only when night time tem- perature stays above 45°F. Maturity dates are from date of outdoor transplanting.

He crossed heirloom tomatoes German Johnson, Beefsteak and sev- eral others, finally getting this terrific variety. He named it Mortgage Lifter because he made enough money selling fruit and plants of this huge, meaty, sweet, pink skinned tomato to get out of hock and pay off his mortgage. The taste of this old-timer is mild and pleasant, and heavy fruit production continues unabated throughout the summer. Indeterminate plants grow very large with remarkable tolerance to diseases. Pink oval cherry fruits are almost always blemish free, weighing up to 2 oz. This tomato is the exception to the rule that heirloom tomatoes have softer flesh than their cousin hy- brids.
