CHICANO PARK
Beneath the Coronado Bridge in Barrio Logan lies the country’s largest collection of outdoor murals – Chicano Park. Forty-some years ago, the city made plans to remove the buildings in Barrio Lo- gan to make room for the bridge. Naturally, the residents did not like the idea. In April of 1970, after occupying the area for twelve days, the community’s voice was heard and plans for Chicano Park were made. Since then, each year on April 22, the community celebrates the anniversary of the park’s takeover with a festival called Chicano Park Day. The park’s dozens of murals celebrate the cultural heritage of the Mexican community that fought for the land. Stroll through the park under the bridge as you admire the vibrant colors and strong messages of the art there.
