LAY OF THE LAND

dred feet away. The Children’s Pool is a small beach protected by a seawall built in 1931. The original intention was to close off the channel and create a safe bathing area for children. In 1970, seals began to frequent the protected cove and even-

tually overtook the beach area. Since then the controversy regard- ing whether or not the seals should be allowed to stay has been a hot topic in the community. So far the seals have won and the area remains their safe haven. The Children’s Pool is a wonderful spot to relax and watch (but

not touch!) the seals, while the waves splash against the sea wall and the sea breeze rustles your hair. Mass Transit bus route #30.

FLYING LEATHERNECK MUSEUM

At The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, the primary pur- pose is to preserve the history of Marine Corps aviation. The muse- um tells the story of Marine Corps aviators and ground crews who flew and maintained the aircraft.

U.S. Marines have been called

many things in the past 235 years, but one of the most recognized names is ‘Leathernecks’. They have owned the name since the days they were assigned to Navy tall ships and their uniforms had leath- er collars to prevent neck injuries from sword slashing. Enjoy and admire nearly 30 vintage aircraft, numerous artifacts that date back to the earliest days of the Corps, and an amazing trophy display. The museum entrance is located on Miramar Road, approximate- ly 1 mile west of I-15, and is easily identified by the American and Marine Corps flags flying over the entrance. Open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. (877) FLY-USMC. www.flyingleath- ernecks.org.
