DOWN PERISCOPE Point Loma is known for its lighthouse and the Cabrillo National
monument however it is also home to a submarine base. In 1959 Fort Rosecrans was turned over to the U.S. Navy. The Navy Submarine Sup- port Facility was established in November 1963 on 280 acres of the land and on October 1, 1981 the base was designated as Naval Sub- marine Base. The installation is located at 140 Sylvester Road in Point Loma. The best way to see the base is to get on board a boat and head out towards the Ocean, the base is located right past Shelter Island on the North shore. To board a submarine get over to the Maritime Museum and tour
one of a fleet of diesel electric submarines the Soviet Navy called “Project 641,” B-39 was commissioned in the early 1970s and served on active duty for more than 20 years. 300 feet in length and displac- ing more than 2000 tons, B-39 is among the largest conventionally powered submarines ever built.
