WINTER IN JULIAN

An hour northeast of Downtown lies the quaint town of Julian. In 1869, cattleman Fred Coleman found a shimmering fleck of gold there, starting San Diego’s first and only gold rush. Over within a de- cade, many pioneers stayed and began farming the rich land. Nowa- days, there is still the opportunity to mine for gold. The Julian Mining Company provides tours that allow you and your group to live a day in the life of an early Californian gold miner. Today, Julian is best known for its unique charm and irresistible

apple pies. Wander down Main Street, taking in the mom ‘n’ pop shops, bakeries, art galleries, antique stores, and restaurants. Each season brings about a picturesque change in scenery—winter brings gentle snowfall, adding sledding and snowball fun to the season’s ac- tivities. At the end of a long day, enjoy some stargazing far away from city lights, and head to a cozy Bed and Breakfast. www.julianca.com
