Allen’s good friend, Kaz Minato, brings his F6F Hellcat Stunt model (at left) back to the pits after a good flight at the 2011 Nats in Muncie. His specs for this molded model are enclosed in the column notes. The nose of Kaz’s Hellcat (center) is, as always for him, a work of art to enclose his Randy Smith .75 and pipe. Kaz creates a very realistic cockpit interior (above) on his Hellcat. Allen really admires Kaz’s control panel detailing.

C/L Stunt model. It was finished and flown at the 1987 Nats. At that time it was pow- ered by an OPS .40 engine with a Future Force Tuned Pipe. The new electric-powered Crossfire Extreme has an inch longer tail moment arm than did the 1987 variant or the 1980 Genesis. This is now called the new Crossfire Extreme. “Here are the stats for the Crossfire Ex-

treme. It has a 58-inch span and weighs in at 62.1 ounces with a Hyperion 4S 4000 mAh battery onboard. This makes it equivalent to a 56-ounce glow airplane without fuel on- board. It has an E-flite Power 25 motor (870 KV) with a Castle Creations Phoenix 45 ESC (Electronic Speed Control); a Will Hubin FM 9 timer. The fan up front is an APC 13–4.5 pusher (reverse pitch) prop, covered by an

E-flite prototype 1¾ inch diameter reverse pitch spinner. “The model features a foam wing and flaps

and foam stab and elevators, by Robin’s View Productions. It also features molded balsa fuselage shells on top and bottom and a set of molded leading edges on the wing. The model was finished in the following manner. The base paint surface has three coats of non-shrink Randolph butyrate dope, then .2 carbon mat (from APC) was attached using 90 percent thinned dope. I then add four more coats of non-shrink butyrate dope, sanded every other coat. Then I use a coat of fillercoat made from non-shrink butyrate and Aero 1 filler (zinc stearate). Finally a thinly sprayed-on blocking coat made up from polar grey and white is applied.

“I do any required ‘fixing’ of the surface af-

ter the blocking coat and then spot in where I sanded through. I then switch to Dupont ChromaBase base coat/clear coat system and use their colors and their catalyzed Multi-mix clearcoat. I sand the clear with 2000-grit paper and soapy water and then buff it by hand using 3M liquid rubbing com- pound and then 3M final glaze. The model is being flown on 68.9-foot, .014 solid lines and seems to like a 5.6 to 5.8 lap time. Plans for this model will be available soon and foam wings, flaps, stabs and elevators are now available from RVP, as are fuselage crutch- es and molded fuselage shell sets.” Call Bob for more information on the Crossfire and other products at 610-746- 0106.
