One of the best features of the AirWare software (above left) is the Wing Type (Swash Plate if Heli mode is used) menu found in System Setup. It offers the choice and graphic presentation of nine different surface/servo combinations
The rolling selector, which is a hallmark
of the higher end Spektrum and JR trans- mitters, is still the main and really the only required method of input. For convenience, there is a Back button and a Clear button on the left side of the screen. You’ll find that you rarely need them. Just below these but- tons is the speaker, and here there’s also something new. Not only is there the usual audible beep, but now there’s also a very at- tention getting warning buzzer. You’ll defi- nitely notice it right away if you turn the transmitter on with the throttle stick at about 30% throttle. In the Warning menu of the System Setup you will have the option of choosing beep or buzzer or both. User input has been simplified and the
key difference in this radio is the menu structure. Related functions are grouped to- gether in one screen instead of being isolat- ed in individual screens. Prime example is the setup for Wing Type found in the System menu tree. Not only can you select the ap- propriate type from 9 choices, but in each choice the appropriate tail types can also be selected. Depending on the wing choice, only certain tail types will be allowed. In this specific menu the graphic display
like the one shown for 2 ailerons and 2 flaps. Whatever the selection it will then automatically select and graphically show possible Tail options (above right). Wing type selection will determine the number of options for the tail.
is quite simple but clear. Each choice shows a graphic of the wing types that can be se- lected, the control surfaces associated with the type, and the servo arrangement for that wing. No need here to go back to the manu- al to check on the the choices and how each is set up. What’s even nicer is that this menu also
serves to select the tail types that can be used with the nine wing types. For most of the selections there are five choices for tail type and in a few instances, only four. If choosing elevon for wing type, there are only two choices. The same is true for the ninth wing type choice, Elevon-B. This last selec- tion had me mystified until it was explained that it makes it easier to set up this type of wing if the control horn positions are oppo- site of a more conventional setup. This same logic for Wing Type is carried
over to the Servo Setup. That’s where three features are grouped that are usually found independently in more conventional menu structures, The three that can be selected in one menu are: Travel, Sub-trim, and Re- verse for all seven channels. The presentation for these choices isn’t readily apparent since the screen presenta-
tion shows only a single choice at a time. To change to any one of these, the rolling selec- tor cursors down to the displayed option; e.g. “Travel”. A solid frame box surrounds it. Pressing the rolling selector changes the frame to a flashing box. Rolling the selector moves the menu from “Travel” to “Sub- trim”, or to “Reverse”. When any of the three are displayed,
pressing the selector will select it and the frame goes solid. This is the procedure for any choice displayed. Roll to the desired op- tion. Press and roll to the final choice. Press to select it. For heli pilots, the wing type menu is re-
placed with the Swash plate menu in Sys- tem Setup. Even from a non-heli pilot van- tage point—just simple coaxial Blades for me—the number of choices cover six setups from simple single servo to 3-servo at a va- riety of geometries. Selecting heli automati- cally changes the menus available in the Function List to those appropriate to a heli- copter, like Gyro, Tail Curve, Pitch Curve, Throttle Curve, Swashplate and Governor. Some of the common menus like Servo Set- up, D/R Setup, Throttle Cut, Mixing, Range Test, Timer and Monitor (this shows servo
Three fundamental servo adjustments like Travel (above left) are found in the Servo menu, accessed through the Function List that’s available

when the DX7s is on and transmitting. Note the selection has been changed to Sub Trim (above right) by rolling the selector and pressing it.
