n the chill of the early Washington winter, whi le most outdoor


enthusiasts in the Pacific Northwest are thinking about snow covered mountains and alpine sports, Puget Sound sailboat racers are looking for opportunities to go racing. Luck would have it that the Tacoma Yacht Club hosts a race to satisfy even the hardiest of Pacific Northwest sailors. Aptly named “Winter Vashon”, TYC’s winter race follows a circuitous route around the beautiful Island of Vashon. In past years, Winter Vashon participants have experienced everything from bracing against strong ice-cold snow squalls to drifting becalmed in the fog and even basking in the dim winter sunshine. In its 34th year, the TYC Winter Vashon race would hold in store for its participants the anticipation and challenge of weather and wind forecast to be variable and gloomy. Under grey, hazy skies, 84 sailboats


from across the Puget Sound gathered at the starting area in preparation for a long and challenging day. The cruising class, with some 19 boats, started one hour ahead of the racing fleets in a
