International Thermal Research 8 Bells for a Grande Dame of Sailing & Cruising
At the same time as husband Jim lost his wife, mate, and first mate of many decades, the world lost one of its great cruisers today. And, in that same moment my wife, Gail, and I lost our adopted sailing and cruising mom. Of whom do I speak? – One of the last Grande Dames of the cruising world, Diana Jessie.
I first met Diana (and Jim) Jessie back in the early 1990s when I signed up for a “Realistic Cruising” seminar at Oakland Yacht Club. The Jessie’s had recently finished a seven year circumnavigation which, among other things, included a circumnavigation of Australia, Diana reporting on the America’s Cup at Perth, a tour d’ force of Europe during the time they spent in the Med, and a cruise up the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) of our own east coast. As if that wasn’t enough, finding themselves in the northeast, they ascended canals and rivers into the Great Lakes, and descended from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico via waterways cutting through the center of our country. After transiting the Panama Canal and cruising up the west coast of Mexico, they tied the knot on their circumnavigation at the resort of Las Hadas, near Manzanillo. Somewhere during their circumnavigation, or
perhaps because of it, Diana found a voice and became a connoisseur and spokesperson of the cruising lifestyle. Years later, with their cruising nowhere near over, they found themselves back in Mexico where they signed up for the 9,000 mile Acapulco – Manila Memorial Regatta in 1998 which they won sailing their cold molded Lapworth 48, Nalu IV.
Over the years Diana has written countless articles for sailing and cruising publications, has contributed chapters to cruising books, and has even authored a couple of cruising books, including “The Cruising Woman’s
