incorporated in it as part of the main heater. The heat exchangers used for hot water heat the water as it flows through so the limit of hot water is the amount of water in the boat’s tank(s). On one of our boats, when switched to the summer loop (a by-pass circuit for only heating domestic hot water) it only takes six minutes to come up to temperature. Many of the hydronic heaters can have an electric element in the expansion tank to help the heating up process when you are at the dock.


Engine heat As mentioned above, you can use


some heat from the engine to heat the air in the cabin or for domestic hot water (water from the tap). You should contact your engine manufacturer for how to plumb this so your engine will run at an even temperature throughout the system. Small diesel engines do not generate a lot of extra heat for both hot water and space heating. Consult your engine manufacturer about this possibility. The space heaters for this application are similar to those above, similar to the heater in your car. It’s better not to take heat out of the system for other purposes until the engine has come up to its running temperature. Wall heaters diesel, propane, or


other fuel types are beyond the scope of this article. This is in part because

these systems are not automatic in the sense of temperature control and have another set of characteristics which are not part of our focus here. To bring it all together: Electric can


be cheap, thermostat controlled and quiet but it is limited to the dock or by how much AC power is available. Diesel forced air can be directed to different areas of the boat and works away from the dock but makes more noise and costs more. Hydronic units can have comfort zones, give a continuous flow of hot water, preheat your engine or use heat from your engine, can be used in different creative ways, and deliver a large amount of BTU s (Figure 5). Hybrid systems can have the advantage of using the lowest cost power or fuel available and all of the advantages just mentioned. For all the diesel heaters we service or install we recommend bio-diesel. Happy winter boating and to all a warm, cozy cabin.
