It’s Showtime! Opening day for boaters is always considered
around the first of May, but in the Northwest, it unofficially starts now with the Seattle, Portland and Vancouver boat shows. The big difference is that, instead of watching the parade pass by, you are the parade passing by what you are watching. Yes, that does make sense.
Once again boaters will be presented with a cornucopia of the
latest and greatest advances in marine technology, along with the tried and true. It’s the perfect place to see everything that you need, as well as a great many things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them. You’ll find a lot of info on upcoming shows in this issue, primarily
the Seattle Boat: Indoor and Afloat. Our Featured Boats at the Show section gives you a preview of what you’ll see at Lake Union and at “the Clink,” as well as intriguing new designs for 2012. The Lowtides section also features pages and pages of seminar
schedules on just about any subject you can imagine. Three of the presenters have articles in this month’s mag. Jim Rard will be speaking on his Alaska trip last summer, the first part of which he writes about in “Sail Alaska 2011: Our first play day at Booker Lagoon.” Mike Huston wrote an article this month to help decipher some of the specs you’ll see on all the boats and how to interpret them, and will be speaking at the show on docking techniques. A skill that will elicit confidence in yourself and a sigh of relief from your boat. “Galley Essentials with Amanda,” has long been a favorite, and she and husband John Neal will be speaking on their countless ocean adventures, always a favorite. Check the schedule to see when they will be speaking. You’ll also recognize many of the other speakers at the show from their previous articles in 48° North. Speaking of “boating candy,” David Schmidt has an article on
some of the whiz bang things he saw at METS, the gigantic marine products show in Holland this year, and shares a few of his favorites with us. Of course, the January issue is when we announce the 48° North/
Harken Top 25 Racers of 2011. Once again we’ll be handing out specially designed hats at the boat show for those on the list, so drop by and pick up your prize. You’ll leave lookin’ good! We’re always updating our website and enjoy hosting a rapidly
growing number of links to the blogs of Northwest cruisers who’ve rounded the corner and headed out. It’s fun reading with dreamy pictures for those occasionally overcast Northwest days. We’ve also added a direct link to the Ameria’s Cup site so you can follow the events leading up to the Cup next year. As of yet we don’t have a definite date for the Coast Guard/Yacht
