boats to allow ease of adjustment when hiking, but also to provide more room for crew to hike. When the trimmer is standing, he can also use his body weight more efficiently to trim. Ergonomically, such setups work very well.

I was a bit surprised to see SS

standing rigging and an e-glass/foam hull on a high-performance racer/ cruiser, rather than composite fibers. Can you explain? The e-glass/foam hull and rod

rigging helps to control costs but the yacht is engineered to a high level, which reduces the construction weight to achieve good performance. With a full carbon construction and composite rigging you will obviously be lighter

and able to sail faster when using the same sailplan, but you will also rate a lot higher in all rating systems.

Moving forward, do you see R/P

getting more involved with racer/ cruiser designs, or do you see the firm staying with purebred racers? R/P has been designing both pure

racers and racer/cruiser designs for over 20 years and it is the owner and the design brief requirements that determine what the next RP designed yacht will be. Moving forward this could be a racer cruiser, purebred racer or even a luxury megayacht. The team always welcomes a challenge to develop something unique, no matter how big or small this challenge might be.

What about the industry and market? What direction is it headed? This is difficult to tell as a result of

the world economies being in such a state of uncertainty. New construction has certainly slowed down over the last few years, but new markets in Asia are developing and the secondhand yacht market has been very active, with secondhand TP52s and older racing yachts switching owners and becoming active again. It would be great to see more custom yachts being built in the U.S., again but unfortunately—at the moment—the focus is certainly overseas.
