During the late 1800’s, the area was


also known for silver mines, which contributed to the early population in the south end of the lake. Nearby Lakeview was the hub for the silver mining operations, with discoveries in Chloride and South Gold Creek, now little more than points along several of the hiking trails and forest roads that run through the National Forest.
