It was one of my bartenders who suggested I put a railroad car on the lot. I thought that was a great idea. Besides, a gauntlet had been dropped. I considered it a dare.“ It was also the beginning of a saga, of sorts. “I found the car, named The Washington, on the internet,” Gevercer says. But finding it was the easy part. It was owned by Monad Railway Equipment Company, and was located in La Miranda, Calif., near Los Ange- les. “I no sooner purchased it than I had to leave it sit for 18 months while I fought to get a building permit to locate the car in Chicago. The city didn’t un- derstand what I was trying to do. At one point they designated it a ‘gas station.’ That would have required 30 feet of open space on all four sides of the car, in case of a fire. I eventually went before the Building Board
