WILMINGTON & WESTERN’S ex-Pennsylvania Railroad doodlebug paused on teh bridge over Red Clay Creek at Wooddale, Del., on October 30, 2011 (opposite). Despite a gloomy, wet day and the colors were still brighter than you’d expect so late in the year. One week later, on November 5, theer was still color to be found along Norfolk Southern’s Lehigh Line as evidenced by an eastbound train rolling through Hamden, N.J.
Southern’s Lehigh Line (ex-Lehigh Valley) in central New Jersey around Flemington, and I found a surprising amount of color still left. Even the following weekend, when I ventured further west on the Lehigh Line into Pennsylvania, there were still patches of bright color. Despite not shooting any- thing during the prime weekends in Octo- ber, this was still a very successful autumn photography season. Late? Definitely, but worth the wait. Otto Heads North While the weather may be sometimes un- predictable here in the Northeast, one of the rewards we get for blistering hot summers and blustery cold winters is a beautiful fall foliage season. Since I live within striking distance of New England, I was looking for- ward to returning to some of my favorite lo- cations to capture these colorful locations. I had been following the developments
with the new Saratoga & North Creek Rail- way, the new designated operators of the
county-owned former Delaware & Hudson Adirondack Branch in upstate New York. A few years back, I had made a couple of Labor Day weekend trips to North Creek to photo- graph previous operator Upper Hudson Riv- er Railroad. Photography was difficult and since Canadian Pacific halted all freight ser- vice in 2003, I didn't know much about the southern portion of the line. As spring gave way to summer, it was an- nounced that Iowa Pacific Holdings was the successful bidder and would operate as the Saratoga & North Creek. The entire line would be opened, including connections to Amtrak trains at Saratoga Springs. What's more, they were planning to operate with an unusual mix of EMD E8s and BL2s. I had only seen an operating BL2 one other time, at the Stourbridge Railroad in Honesdale, Penn. Once S&NC released artwork that showed the BL2 wearing a snappy rendition of D&H blue-and-gray, I knew I'd have to make a return trip to the North Country. I had become preoccupied with other pro-
jects and had forgotten about the S&NC un- til my friend Chris Stilson called me up and reminded me it was time to start planning

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included
