TWO SOUTHERN CONSOLS IN STEAM
Lexington Meet in Knoxville

THE 2011 LEXINGTON GROUP in Transportation History held their an- nual meeting in Knoxville, Tenn., over the week of November 8-14, 2011, host- ed by the Norfolk Southern and the Knoxville & Holston River Railroad (a subsidiary of Gulf & Ohio). Well estab- lished railroad historians, authors, and journalists gathered for a week of pre- sentations and a series of special excur- sions featuring NS’s classy streamlined diesels and three steam locomotives op- erated by the K&HR and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. A total of four
excursions were held on NS routes and an additional two excursions were host- ed on the K&HR. Significantly, this was the most ambitious outing to date for NS’s revived steam program. Tennessee Valley Railroad Muse-
um’s Southern 2-8-0 No. 630 kicked off the week’s events, leading a five coach NS excursion north from Chattanooga on Tuesday, November 8, to Knoxville, for Lexington Group members only. The move operated over NS’s West End District north from Chattanooga. In Knoxville, Gulf & Ohio Railways
hosted an excursion on its Knoxville & Holston River Railroad on Thursday, November 10, utilizing two different lo- comotives and consists. Group mem- bers were bused from the Hilton in downtown Knoxville to Coster Yard, site of the former Southern Railway car and locomotives shops and currently the interchange yard between NS and K&HR. Former Southern Railway 2-8- 0 No. 154, now owned by the G&O and operated by the K&HR, led five NS coaches from Coster Yard to Mar- bledale on the River Front Extension, a
