Business booms as 2012 looms
With double-digit year-on-year revenue growth being reported by a number of companies, industry watchers might wonder how the wider economic analysis for 2011 and predictions for 2012 can range from recession and flat growth to even depression. El
ectr o Optics’ reportage of the developing
business situation this year has only found positive noises from companies and conferences such as Munich’s Laser World of Photonics, which saw brisk trade. While these dramatic double-digit percentages may simply reflect how bad business was this time in 2010, companies are also talking about their best year ever. It is all good news for an industry that decided to invest during the lean years of 2008 and 2009. Whatever the economics, research goes on and this issue has features about developments in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). Nadya Anscombe’s OCT feature on page 12 is all about the prospect of non-contact biopsies for the skin and internal organs. While my article about EUV reveals the expanding range of wavelengths and applications that are becoming available beyond lithography. Finally, Greg Blackman looks at how scanning technology will enable the increases in laser productivity that industry demands. Looking to the new year it is time for
Photonics West 2012 once again this January. As the new editor of El
ectr o Optics this will be
my first Photonics West and so I hope to see many of you there, and if you cannot be there, be sure to check the website for the latest show news and subscribe to our email newsletters, EONewsline and EOProductline to get all the stories from San Francisco neatly packaged.
