The EOS Affiliated Societies elected Irina Livshits from rOS, rozhdestvensky Optical Society, as their new representative in the EOS board of directors. Livshits follows risto myllylä, and will hold this position for the next two years. In her new office Livshits acts as intermediary
between the representatives of the Affiliated Societies and the EOS board and stands in for the interests of the societies within the EOS and vice versa. Since 2009, she has been well known to the EOS as a member of the Advisory committee.

At the national
research university ITmO, Livshits is presently research director of the Engineering center OPTIcA and head of the Laboratory of cAd of Opto- information and Energy Saving Systems. Since 2010, she has acted as director of russian-Korean Optical design center ITmO-KPu. Among others, Livshits serves as the vice-chair of the International committee for rozdestvensky Optical Society, russia. Her research interests include imaging and non-imaging optical systems, expert systems and genetic algorithms for optical design, optical design software and opto-electronic computing.

Geographical interface: Eos to foster cooperation between Europe and Africa
To support the mediterranean photonics community and to bring it into greater focus among scientists from all over the world, the EOS is organising the first EOS Topical meeting on Photonics for Sustainable development – Focus on the mediterranean (PSdm 2012) in Tunisia. From 31 march until 3 April, the location near Tunis will be a meeting point for knowledge exchange between the researchers’ communities from Europe and all mediterranean countries. Students and young researchers from north Africa and the middle East will be given space to present their activity, to take the chance of discussing them with senior scientists and to establish academic contacts to European scientists. Together with the International commission for

Optics, IcO, the International union of Pure and Applied Physics, IuPAP, and the Optical Society of America, OSA, the EOS will provide selected students with fee waivers and travel support to enable all who deserve it due to scientific merit to join PSdm 2012 regardless of their financial situation. Zohra ben Lakhdar from the
Faculty of Sciences in Tunis in Tunisia and EOS Past President roberta ramponi from the Politecnico di milano in Italy are jointly chairing PSdm 2012. both have cooperated successfully in the past. Sixteen invited speakers will highlight their latest research, including Ibrahim Abdulhalim from ben Gurion university of the negev in beer Sheva, Israel, reporting on ‘Surface Plasmon resonance from Structured Thin Films with Application to

biosensing’. Since miniaturisation combined with higher sensitivity and specificity is the great challenge of biosensing, this topic deserves high attention. In this respect, surface plasmon resonance, SPr, is a very promising and versatile approach. It can be used to enhance the surface sensitivity of traditional spectroscopic measurements like fluorescence or raman, but even in the case of simple reflectivity measurements it can be used to detect the presence of adsorbing molecules since they change the resonance conditions. Surface patterning makes it possible to extend SPr also to imaging applications. SPr can be considered the tool of the future in the life- science sector, since it offers an innovative approach to label-free biomolecular analysis and the

possibility to monitor a large variety of bio-interactions. As photonics in general is one of
the key enabling technologies and essential to face the grand challenges of our time, it has a strong impact in many application fields such as IcT, healthcare, energy saving and efficiency, security, environmental monitoring, etc. Therefore, the conference aims to present highlights of photonics and initiate the discussion about its role for a sustainable development. PSdm 2012 is organised in
cooperation with the Tunisian Optical Society (Sociétè Tunisienne d’Optique) and follows the XII. Education and Training in Optics and Photonics conference (ETOP 2012) to be held from 29-31 march 2012. Submission is open until 15 december 2011.
