Dan Cunliffe, Head of BE Wholesale, argues that there’s far more to broadband than speed alone.

become an obsession. With broadband, this obsession can have an unhealthy focus on download speeds. However, downloading is just one side of the coin and partners need to flip this over so that their customers see the whole picture, one where upload speeds are given greater priority and understanding.

“At Comms Vision we presented where we think the industry is heading and what we consider to be the most important issues for vendors and wholesalers,” said Dan Cunliffe, Head of BE Wholesale. “We highlighted four key trends: The changing behavioural patterns of generation Y; the growing consumerisation of IT; the mobilisation of the cloud; and, most important of all, the customer experience. These major trends have at their centre a basic need for connectivity. Broadband – and in particular upload speeds – are now business critical.”

The customer experience is where it all begins, notes Cunliffe. “The channel needs to ensure that it can provide its customers with a reliable and consistent service that delivers on the needs and promises of an ‘anytime, anyplace’ world,” he added. “In turn, that world is being driven by the Generation Y entering the workplace. These digital natives have grown up in a connected world and demand the same level of social media use, file sharing, and online collaboration at work as at home, and are at the forefront of the drive towards installing business-grade broadband.”
Consumerisation Likewise, the trend of IT consumerisation that has seen personal laptops, smartphones and tablets enter the workplace is also driving the need for greater connectivity. Industry analysts IDC recently conducted a survey into the consumerisation of IT which found that 95 per cent of the workers surveyed have used technology they purchased themselves for

work, which means that employees now expect to be able to connect to work data from wherever they are.
“This leads to the final trend, the mobilisation of cloud computing that is seeing more information stored in the cloud and greater collaboration between remote workers,” commented Cunliffe. “Resellers and wholesalers need to be cautious and yet confident in their own ability to cope with the added stress that these trends place on their network supply and not leave their customers frustrated with frequent jitter or increased latency.
“Partners should not focus solely on the highest speeds but rather look at their customers and question if they have the upload speeds that are fit for purpose. By posing these questions quick and early on, resellers will ensure that customers not only have an unrivalled customer experience, but they will also have the broadband connection that best suits their needs.” n Comms Vision Report – P20
