Colt extends reach via Magirus link up

It’s natural that we partner with Colt as its pan- European footprint matches ours and its cloud data cen- tres are built on the Vblock Infrastructure Platform from VCE which we already distrib- ute across EMEA.”
The deal struck between Magirus and Colt is very much a first stage as both compa- nies look at how cloud offerings reach the wider market. With its Tier 3 data cen- tres, connectivity and growing understanding of VMware, Colt was an obvious choice of part- ner as Magirus looks to answer the questions its customers, the resellers, are asking about the cloud and what is available for the end users.
What the two are offering is a clear Infrastructure as a Service, no bundles of software or aggregated services, sim- ply an environment of virtual machines and storage for cus- tomers to use as they want, with varying levels of SLA, and vari- ous times, even PAYG by the minute if that is what is required by the customer.
It is right for those custom- ers who are neither too small to want to try to build their own clouds, nor large enough to start building their own.

That huge middle group is the sweet spot which needs secure data and systems, backed by SLAs and with a scalable cloud. It still depends on the resellers as trusted advisers, says Northern European direction of Magirus, Andrew Binding. And resellers, themselves being challenged by new chan- nels such as hosting and service providers, are looking for some- one they can work with who is not going to be a competitor. Binding said: “By offering Infrastructure as a Service we are allowing resellers to add value. We know that at the start a lot of the work is going to be bespoke and experimental. “So this is a first step, not a particularly big one either. The adoption rate is likely to be slow, but there will be a lot of learning on this. Every conver- sation with partners and their customers is different at this time, but many are keen to be early adopters. Through this we have the scale and repeatability to go much further.”

The target market for Magirus is its existing resell- ers. “Magirus resellers are being asked about cloud by their cus- tomers who need someone that can give answers and a working environment,” said Binding. Colt is an appropriate part-
ner, the size of its operation and being European makes it a natural fit for Magirus. And the Colt VMware experience makes it a pioneer in that market. “This new strategic rela- tionship is an extension of our already successful European partner programme,” comment- ed Francois Eloy, EVP Colt Communication Services. “Cloud has significantly matured and we are already see- ing an increase in demand for infrastructure as a service from our customers.
“By working with Magirus, we will now be able to sell through a wider reseller commu- nity with an IT background.”
