plied by the modeler. The kit does not include supports for the center of the roof corner grabs. These can be easily formed from .008″ brass wire. Air hoses are not included in the kit. Hi-Tech De- tails hoses (No. 6040) were installed on the review model. Below the hand brake housing one will need to obtain the chain, vertical rod and bell crank. These must be supplied by the model- er, along with a retainer valve and its piping and a train line along the lower right car side. On the model, the rectangular areas

of the roof surface above the ladders are smooth. A photo of the prototype roof shows these areas should repre- sent non-slip grid steel. Placard boards, shown in some pro-

totype photos on the right-most trian- gular side panels, may be cut from styrene and added on the model. The same is true for the trust plate, visible in most prototype photos on the upper right corner of the left side of the car. The train line that runs along the right car side is suspended about 5 inches below the sides. On the review model a train line was formed from .012″ brass wire. Weight can be glued in the hop- per bottoms before installing the roof on the carbody. Install the hatch handles before at- taching the roof on the body. Also in- stall the brake cylinder before attach- ing the brass ends. It is important to place the hopper

bottom piece at the correct height inside the body. Refer to the instructions and to photos for this. When installing the delicate brass ends, it is helpful to use a T-square to squarely align them before gluing in place. The coupler boxes molded on the cen-

ter sill are designed to accept Kadee No. 78 couplers. The provided box covers are to be glued in place, which makes coupler maintenance difficult. One might prefer to drill a hole, tap it, and use a suitable machine screw. There are no instructions on how to fabricate the hopper gate assemblies other than “reference photos for parts and orientation.” Many plastic parts are involved. Before starting assembly, study the photos to understand how the parts are oriented. All grab irons and hand rails are

pre-cut and pre-formed from .008″ stainless steel wire. A 2-inch length of .030″×.125″ strip styrene is useful as a gauge when gluing the pre-formed grab irons at a consistent standoff. Ce- menting the .008″ grabs into their .008″ holes in the thin brass etchings re- quires patience and a steady hand. The PRR painted its freight cars

what it called “freight car color,” an ox- ide red brighter than that used by most North American railroads. The color changed over the years, and reproduc- ing it has long been debated by model- ers. The review model was painted with a 50:50 mix of Poly Scale Zinc Chromate Primer and Special Oxide Red. Publication of color pictures often distorts the shade. Rail Shop sells ten decal sets appro-

priate for this H30 model. They can be purchased at the Rail Shops website (above) for $4.95 each. Rail Shop’s de- cal set HPRR01 was installed on the model. Although it will take some work, this new kit from Rail Shop will produce an accurate, high-quality mod- el appropriate for the period 1935 to the late 1970’s. The price for the kit is $42.00.—JOHN RIDDELL
