very similar class H30A covered hop- pers from October, 1951, through 1952. They were numbered 255576 to 255825. Although visually similar, the H30A differed from the H30 in a num- ber of ways. The main differences were the hopper gates and the H30 had cast bolsters, while the later H30A had fab- ricated bolsters. Also, the roof running boards on the H30 were integral and welded in place while last order of 300 H30’s and the H30A’s had AAR-ap- proved separate running boards. The H30’s were originally painted

ed light gray with the circle-keystone lettering in black. The size of the let- tering remained 7″ tall. The change to painting covered hoppers gray was generally done in the 1950’s as many railroads found most loads deposited light colored dust on the exteriors. In February, 1954, the PRR started applying its new shadow-keystone


scheme with 13″ tall letters. From 1954 to 1960 four variations of the shadow- keystone scheme were applied to the gray H30 hoppers. Then in September, 1961, many were repainted gray with the PRR plain-keystone lettering. Some H30 hoppers later received


other paint and lettering including: PRR sand service (red), PRR m.o.w. service (yellow), Penn Central gray, Penn Central sand service (green) and Conrail (gray). The H30 cars rode on several types of


trucks, including Crown, double truss, National B-1, and Young types. A photo shows a car fitted with a power hand brake with a Universal M1704 hand wheel. In June, 1966, 1,247 of the origi- nal 1,325 H30 hoppers were still in rev- enue service lettered for PRR. By De- cember, 1976, only 37 remained in a PRR paint scheme, while six were let- tered for Penn Central.
