ing scenery, an old one or a photocopy will do just as well. Digressing in another direction,

some things are special in ways that may transcend economic value or per- sonal collecting. An item that was im- portant to the record run of, let’s say, “Old No. 99” back in 1910 may be nice on the wall of your train room, but doesn’t it really belong at the railroad museum that salvaged Old 99, and where the volunteers who spent thou- sands of hours restoring it can enjoy it? These decisions are personal choices of course, but contributing to collections like those at the Colorado Railroad Mu- seum, to take just one worthy example, can be very rewarding and helpful, in the same way as maintaining a mem- bership. A number of collectors I know received enormous satisfaction from building a collection, documenting it, and later donating it to a university, museum or historical society. Besides making an important contribution to society at large, a gift of value like this may also have tax advantages. Sue Knous’ new book is a fascinating catalog and price guide of railroadiana,

full of interesting and unusual items, as well as the commonplace. It is quite astounding in its coverage with over 4,500 pictures of items in 33 chapters each with a brief introduction. There is also a 16-page color section. The book is beautifully printed on a nice coated stock. I am sorry to say that in my pa- perback copy, which was handled very carefully, the pages of the first signa- ture began to fall out soon after I start- ed to read the book, so check the bind- ing carefully. If this book doesn’t whet your ap-

petite for looking into a few collectibles from your favorite railroad, I don’t know what will. Take a look in corners of your train room, or old family albums and trunks, and you might discover some forgotten treasures. I enjoyed just browsing through it and learned a lot in the process. I’m sure this book is going to be referred to routinely by countless collectors, whether serious or casual, and museum curators or historians. The book is like having an Antiques Roadshow expert sitting in your li- brary, waiting to answer your ques- tions.–ROBERT D. TURNER
