4. THE PEOPLE’S WAR

Manassas National Battlefield is the site of the two Battles of Bull Run. During the first, in July 1861, much of Washington’s “upper crust” ventured out by horse and buggy to “see a real battle” – only to become entangled in retreating Union lines, learning firsthand that the war would be no picnic. Your guided visit is followed by a tour of the Ben Lomond Historic Site, a Federal-style home which served as a Confederate hospital; living historians help tell its story. Then it’s on to Historic Occoquan. This thriving waterfront artists’ community began life as an 18th-century mill town, and is now a Virginia state landmark; browse its charming shops and buildings, and enjoy lunch on the Potomac. The terrible cost of the Civil War – and some of its greatest ironies – are all too apparent at Arlington National Cemetery, the nation’s most hallowed ground and resting place of over 285,000 American veterans. But before the Civil War, this serene spot across the Potomac from Washington, DC, was the estate of Gen. Robert E. Lee. As you tour this poignant place and visit Arlington House, Lee’s former home, gain insights into the man who turned down Lincoln’s offer to lead Union troops and instead accepted command of the military forces of his beloved Virginia... and who, at war’s end, could never go home again, because his front yard had become a graveyard for his former enemies. Tonight, all gather for our gala farewell dinner in the National Portrait Gallery, which once served as a Union hospital and was the site of Lincoln’s second inaugural ball. You’ll enjoy delicacies from that inaugural menu at dinner, a toast by Tauck family members, and live Civil War-era music. Meals BLD
