YEAR IN REVIEW About Membership USA Triathlon’s 140,000-plus members are comprised of an incredible mix of athletes, coaches, offi cials, parents, volunteers and event directors. Each member contributes to the growth of the sport. USA Triathlon welcomed more than 102,000 adult members and over 37,000 youth members in 2010.
With more than 400 elite-level athletes, the pool for World Championship team selection can be diffi cult to choose. Many of these athletes are the best in the world at their discipline, and USA Triathlon is proud to support them as they reach for new heights as individuals and as we seek to fulfi ll our potential as a country in international competition.
The youth side of the sport continues to rapidly expand. With nearly 27 percent of total annual membership under the age of 18, USA Triathlon is very excited to watch and support the performances of the next generation of multisport athletes.
National and Regional Rankings USA Triathlon experienced yet another record year in 2010 — 2,165 events were scored, and more than 38,000 athletes were included in the fi nal rankings.
Not unlike past years, rankings were once again one of the most popular benefi ts of annual membership in 2010. There is no reason to believe that 2011 will be any diff erent. In order for an athlete to qualify for the fi nal 2010 rankings, athletes were required to be an annual member on Dec. 31, 2010. In addition to membership, one must have competed in three USA Triathlon- sanctioned triathlons to qualify for the fi nal rankings. Other disciplines such as duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike and off -road triathlon required two USA Triathlon-sanctioned events.
