PURPOSE STATEMENT The purpose of the National Events department is to organize and execute USA Triathlon National Championship events to the highest level, while supporting and expanding Team USA, paratriathlon, collegiate triathlon and draft-legal racing in the United States.

YEAR IN REVIEW USA Triathlon’s Collegiate National Championship continued to demonstrate why it is one of the organization’s marquee events. The event was held in Lubbock, Texas, for the second straight year and saw over 1,100 participants from more than 100 collegiate clubs. Even with minor weather concerns, the event highlighted the nation’s best collegiate triathletes and saw the University of Colorado take home the overall team national title.

Richmond, Va., played host to USAT’s Duathlon National Championship for the third and fi nal year in 2010. The city proved to be a popular destination for duathletes in the Mid-Atlantic Region and the entire nation, as the 2010 event recorded another record-breaking level of participation with over 1,800 duathletes competing in the weekend’s activities.

USA Triathlon’s Junior and Youth National Championship made its debut in San Diego, Calif., in 2010 with rave reviews. Thanks to key collaboration from the United States Marine Corps, the event was held on the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in the heart of San Diego. The event continued the format of combining the youth age group component (ages 7-15) with USA Triathlon’s development pipeline of Youth Elite (ages 13-15) and Junior Elite (ages 16- 19) athletes. The weekend also showcased a new and exciting mixed team relay event.

Tuscaloosa, Ala., played host to USA Triathlon’s Age Group, Sprint and Elite National Championships. 2010 marked the fi rst year all three events were combined into one large celebration of the sport. The event welcomed over 1,700 athletes from across the country. Age Group athletes were able to “do the double” — compete in both Olympic and sprint-distance events — and also watch Laura Bennett and Jarrod Shoemaker capture the elite national titles.

Team USA sent teams to a trio of ITU World Championship events across the globe in 2010 — Olympic and sprint triathlon in Budapest, Hungary; duathlon in Edinburgh, Scotland; and long distance triathlon in Immenstadt, Germany. A total of 727 age-groupers proudly represented the U.S. in these events.
