NOW BI-MONTHLY GO TO PAGE 18 AND SUBSCRIBE TODAY! AUTUMN 2011 | NEW AFRICAN WOMAN | 3 H
ere at NAW, we are highly intoxicated with some very exciting news!! We really are on a high! Riding high that is! But before I can break that news to you, I would like to honour a woman whom for me, simple words fail to eulogise and objectify – the legend that was Wangari Maathai (see page 96). With her passing to cancer on 25 September, no other African woman has received so many world tributes on their death, other than perhaps the passing of Miriam Makeba in 2008. In my household, I like to engage my young daughter in all things and public figures that I feel have helped to shape and inspire my thinking to make me a strong, assertive and empowered woman. She listened keenly as I retold the story of Wangari. At the end of our talk (well, more like a lecture!), my 16 year old said thanks mum, and reminded me that I had used the world EXCEPTIONAL in almost every sentence describing Wangari! Exceptional indeed embodies the visionary, courageous, inspiring, supermum, believer, doer, giver, warrior. I am sure most of you will have your own words and tributes on how Wangari’s work and women’s rights activism affected or empowered you. We can only all do everlasting honour by continuing to champion all that she stood for by embracing the changes she advocated within our households, as individuals and into higher hierarchies and echelons of power. At the time of her passing, we had all but
wrapped up the production of this fantastic edition, which has a special focus on the African woman’s diverse beauty looks. I can’t help but mention here that Wangari Maathai had something about her that radiated a confident beauty. As a woman who was so focused on her activism and fight to make the world a better place, she probably had little time for the frivolity of how she looked. But as I looked back at her life and her life in pictures, it occurred to me there was something about Wangari that gave
her an endearing beautiful look – and now I know, it was her smile! Does anyone remember her without a smile? Wangari had the most beautiful smile that radiated the beauty she felt inside. Inspired by the Maathai magic, we are on fire at
NAW!!!! We worked extra hard on this issue that we are fashionably and beautifully burnt out, but hope you will feel the heat too! NAW 11 is hot. What beauty style really works for you? This issue is not here to define any seasonal beauty guide nor set particular beauty styling agendas, NAW 11 is here to amplify what you have and illuminate your uniqueness This beauty issue is not here to set any
standards – that, you do yourself. The best yardstick to your beauty is loving what you see in the mirror everyday when you wake up! You can take our Top 10 male fashion designers
wrapped up as your personal assistant to guide you to the perfect frock. These men are transforming African fashion. We have a candid discussion on women’s vaginal health, which women will find practical and relevant. And now, back to the good news!!! Everyone involved in women’s magazine
publishing, will know that, like lemmings, women’s magazines sprout up everywhere! In our 30-month journey since the launch of New African Woman, we have seen many a “Goliath” in the name of mag- azines targeting black women come big and fall hard. It is therefore exciting and welcome news that
the publishers of New African Woman have decided that this issue is our LAST issue as a quarterly! From January, your favourite magazine is going
bi-monthly, with even more captivating content and a brand new look and design! We are grateful that you have fallen in love with NAW and to that end we promise you we shall not falter in our mission to give you coverage which: inspires rather than imposes; expertly advises rather than dictates; and tastefully portrays our diverse beauty, rather than cheapen it! This our motto shall remain emboldened!
