Mark


Mark is a teenager with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He has had support from a team of Ambition 24direct nurses at home on a 24-7 basis since 2003. We have ensured the same team throughout this time to help meet his complex care needs.


Mark uses a wheelchair and is supervised at all times, as he is at risk of choking and aspiration. Assisted ventilation is required at night and when he swims, which is recommended for his rehabilitation.


Spinal Muscular Atrophy neuromuscular disease results in degeneration of motor neurons, and progressive wasting away and weakness. Patients like Mark require comprehensive medical care involving multiple disciplines - including paediatric critical care, medicine and rehabilitation, as well as physical, occupational and respiratory therapy, and clinical nutrition.


Ambition 24direct provides a nursing team to accompany Mark at all times, day and night, including at school, on holiday and for hospital visits. The goal is to enable him to lead as normal a life as possible as a teenager, whilst ensuring his continuing safety and well-being.
