UK makes major contribution at global symposium

Teams and individuals from the UK made an important contribution to General Dynamics’ Annual Engineering and Technology Council Awards and Symposium.

The event, held in Falls Church, Virginia, recognises key achievements in engineering and innovation as well as sharing and exploiting knowledge from across the Corporation worldwide. The event attracted attendance from across all business groups within General Dynamics, and the awards were presented by the Corporation’s chairman and CEO Jay Johnson.

General Dynamics UK had three

papers selected by the Council for presentation at the Symposium.

Ian Davies presented a paper

entitled ‘The Application of Pattern of Life’ which was voted as the number one paper the Corporation wanted to hear. Pattern of Life (PoL) is a statistically-based method of

detecting anomalies in large amounts of data and has potential application across defence and security systems.

Kevin Lindsay presented a paper

entitled ‘Market Leading Electronic Architecture for Land Vehicles’ – an important growth area for the Company. This also presented an excellent opportunity to promote UK capabilities to representatives of General Dynamics Combat Systems group which supplies land vehicles worldwide.

Additionally, Sandra Hudson

showcased a paper entitled ‘System Engineering Competencies –What does ‘good’ look like?’. Systems engineering is recognised as a key skill and differentiator for General Dynamics, and not surprisingly the paper attracted a lot of interest.

Andrew Schild received an

Innovation Award from Johnson for his work on developing the MoD’s system of systems approach. Andrew performed this key piece of work during his two-year secondment to the MoD’s Key System Advisor change initiative, which is aimed at improving the cost effectiveness of MoD’s Network Enabled Capability.

HMS Bulwark upgrades to BCIP5.4

HMS Bulwark and 4 Assault Group Royal Marines (ASRM) are now reaping the full benefits of BCIP5.4 following the successful completion of an uplift by the BCIP Fielding and Implementation naval team.

HMS Bulwark is one of the most up-to- date amphibious platforms in the Royal Navy, capable of delivering, supporting and controlling an amphibious force worldwide.

Once deployed, it acts as a brigade

headquarters afloat for 3 Commando Brigade and the Commodore Amphibious Task Group (COMATG). The platform fit consists of 12 VHF radios, 24 HF radios, one High Capacity Data Radio (HCDR) and 37 data terminals.

As an integral part of HMS Bulwark, 4

ASRM operates four Landing Craft Utility Mark 10, plus four Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel Mark 5B. Each platform contains a combination of VHF radios, HF radios, HCDR and data terminals.

The team responsible for the uplift spent

eight days on board the ship at Devonport Naval Base conducting a BCIP5.2 baseline of HMS Bulwark. Once the baseline was completed, the ship, 4 ASRM platforms and spares were upgraded to BCIP5.4.

A ‘set to work’ exercise was conducted

Ian Davies, Sandra Hudson, Neil Taylor, Jeff Searle and Kevin Lindsay represented General Dynamics UK at the Engineering and Technology Council Awards

on the ship’s fit and the upgrade was finally presented at a Naval Weapons Harbour Trial to the Maritime Capability, Trials and Assessment (MCTA) team. The uplift of each surface fleet platform involves considerable planning because of the limited dockside time available. The customer extended its thanks to the General Dynamics UK field team for working around the clock to prepare the ship for operations.
