Susan McCarthy, Director of Hennessy Hair & Beauty Ltd, chats to IB about her passions in life.
My father, Pat Hennessy, had always been in the hair and beauty industry working for Wella for 16 years, so I was always surrounded by it. As I grew up I developed an interest in beauty as most girls do, and realised what a great business it was to be involved in. As my interest grew I became more involved with the business and developed my career from there.
The thing I love most about my job is selling. In these tough financial times it is a great achievement to succeed in making sales, especially with the tough competition that’s out there. I’m the main buyer for the company, selecting new product ranges and collections. It gives you great satisfaction to see a product you have individually handpicked go on to sell really well, I love that part of my job.
An average day for me involves coming into the office and checking my emails, having meetings with staff and my financial controller. In this industry though every day can be different, being a buyer means my job role can be quite varied form day-to-day.
I’m a mother of three so most of my spare time revolves around my children and family. Aside from my family life I really enjoy walking as a hobby. I find it is a great stress reliever to get out in the fresh outdoors.
I’m very much a people person. A customer actually commented recently when I moved into the office from being face-to-face that it was a shame they wouldn’t be dealing with me directly anymore. My people skills are put to use now in other areas, such as meeting with potential suppliers.

My favourite beauty treatments definitely have to be manicures and pedicures! When I do get the time to have a great pedicure there’s nothing like that feeling of being totally pampered.
I can’t live without my iPhone. If ever I leave it at home I’m in an instant panic about the calls and emails I could be missing!
My motto is try and live your life to the full, enjoy everyday and make it count, because you never know what is round the corner. I have a friend who has been ill recently and it definitely makes you think and brings the point home.
I would like to be remembered as being a person who is loyal, honest and funny.
