Should salons be open seven days a week?

Niamh Finucane

Office Administrator at Phorest

“Opening seven days a week allows your customers extra flexibility when booking appointments.”

“There can be an argument made for both sides of this question.

“Many women, whether working outside or inside the home, are busy Monday to Friday, and Saturdays can also be frantic. Many would see Sunday as the ideal day to go and relax with a facial, manicure or some other treatment to unwind after a hectic week, and prepare for a busy week ahead. By offering the extra day, you open the door to existing clients and increase the potential for expanding your client database.

“However, this would have to be balanced with the cost for staffing the extra day, coupled with the running costs for the salon, electricity, heat, etc.

“Perhaps a way to measure this would be to initially trial the extra day opening once or twice a month. Assess how busy you are on that day and the profit made, against your outlay for the day. Do this over a period of a few months to get an average figure and this should indicate whether or not it is worth your while to open.

“Feedback is also critical. Ask your clients what they think. Would they come on a Sunday? Do they think it is a good idea? They, ultimately, will help determine your decision.”

“If you wanted to give Sundays a try expect to do a lot of promotions and to keep costs down using part time staff to provide the extra hours.”

“It really depends on where the salon is located. If it is in the City Centre then it is likely to be a good idea, especially Dublin where there are lots of areas where people are out shopping on a Sunday. If it is situated in a gym, it could also be very beneficial as there are clients going in and out all the time, seven days a week. If it is in a main shopping centre that is always busy on a Sunday, then once again it would be a good idea.

“However if your salon is not in any of these and you do not already have clients using your services on a Sunday then it will take time to build up the business on a Sunday.

“By all accounts it really does depend on your client database; if the majority of your clients are housewives / mums, then Sunday is usually a family day and you will struggle to get business on this day.

“If you wanted to give Sundays a try expect to do a lot of promotions and to keep costs down using part time staff to provide the extra hours. Personally I would survey my clients to see how many would like Sundays for treatments.”

“In a big salon with a lot of staff to rotate weekends I couldn’t see it being a problem”

“I say why not, if there is demand. Personally, I operate a small salon and would never consider it as I believe a therapist needs two consecutive days off to decompress! I think that in any care- giving job you can burn out really quickly and need proper down time.

“In a big salon with a lot of staff to rotate weekends I couldn’t see it being a problem.

“Having said that, two large salons in Wexford town have tried opening seven days at different times and both have now gone back to six. I don’t know if that was lack of demand but I would imagine so. Spas that are open seven days are often quiet on a Sunday.”

“I would like to see all businesses closed on a Sunday”

“I would like to see all businesses closed on a Sunday, so we might as a society get back to having a family day as you see on the continent.

“A couple of early morning and late night openings would still give clients the time to receive their treatments.

“In Germany they close on Saturday afternoon and all day on Sunday and everybody still manages to obtain the treatments that they require.”
