Beauty - Mineral Make-up ............................................................................................................................................................................................. What makes a

“Minerals provide excellent coverage on blemishes, and help even out skin tone,” says Nicola Walsh of Blush. “[They] provide better coverage control, meaning that even the smallest amount provides great coverage, so applying more provides a more flawless coverage.”

Generally Mineral Bases come in three formulations: Pressed Powder – in a compact and applied with a sponge, Loose Powder – in a pot applied with a Kabuki brush and ‘tap, swirl, buff’ motion, and Liquid – applied with a sponge or fingertips.

“Mineral Foundation, especially crushed, has a much lighter feel on the skin when compared to traditional cosmetic foundations and creates a breathable barrier for your skin, protecting it from the environment and free radicals whilst also providing the coverage that you require,” adds Michelle Doan, founder of Emani Minerals.

“Dermatologists and skin experts all agree that mineral make-ups are better for your skin,” says Tina Newman of Revive Beauty Ltd. “The iron, zinc oxides, and natural botanical extracts have anti-inflammory, anti-ageing, anti- bacteria and sun protection properties that are beneficial for the skin. Because of its calming effects on the skin, it truly benefits people with inflammatory skin problems such as rosacea or acne.”

Jane Iredale, who introduced mineral make-up in 1994, explains why these products are also so good for more mature clients: “Traditional make-up fills wrinkles, and because it has a high degree of talc, cornstarch or nylon, it becomes a matte coating on the skin which allows the light to absorb, and you can see into whatever‘s going on

underneath. “Micronised minerals are coated (in Dimethicone) so that the crystals reflect and refract the light – scattering it. So the minerals don’t allow you to see into the skin and they give a soft, diffusion of light that makes the skin look healthy and younger.”

Many mineral bases also offer a sun protection factor (SPF), protecting skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Without adding any chemical sunscreens, mineral bases are effective due to their use of Titanium Dioxide. “Mineral make- up often contains Titanium Dioxide which has a natural SPF of 15 so provides your face with some sun protection although you should always wear sun-screen when required,” explains Michelle.

Mineral make-up is also very popular amongst dermatologists and plastic surgeons. According to Jane, minerals should become a part of any aesthetician’s treatment protocol.

“Minerals can be applied immediately after a Microdermabrasion or a light peel. They will not only cover redness, but the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are also known anti-inflammatories, that will help to calm erythema from treatments. It is important to replace the stratum corneum that has been lost after these kinds of procedures because that is the body’s first defence against the sun,” she says.

It can also be used very effectively to conceal birthmarks, skin imperfections and tattoos. For example, glõminerals’ Corrective Camoufl age Kit features a sheer, easy-to-apply formula that expertly neutralises and conceals skin discolourations. Corrective Camouflage Concealer is also available, as well as Redness Relief Powder.

mineral make-up? “In a true mineral make-up formulation, you should not see fillers such as talc,” says Jane Iredale. “The high percentage of minerals is what provides such versatile coverage, sun protection and benefits for the skin. This concentrated pigment also gives the mineral powder such adherence that it rarely transfers or needs touching-up. Traditional colour cosmetics contain 70 – 90% talc and are often coloured with petroleum-derived dyes (FD&C or D&C).

“Talc is not good to include in any kind of make-up, mineral or not. Talc is very drying to the skin, it accentuates fi ne lines and pores, and is what leads to your make-up looking crepey.”

Jane continues: “The quality, quantity, particle size and type differ from brand to brand, but you should see a combination of any of these ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides, Mica or Boron Nitride. The minerals should appear at the top of the ingredient list and not at the bottom.”
