able to find information in one central location, J. Blake Slemmer has gathered details for a number of websites about farms and farm-related activities locally and across the nation. A self-taught web designer, he began creating websites in the 1990’s. When he wanted to take visiting family strawberry picking, he had difficulty track- ing places that offered “pick-your-own.” He collected the particulars from his search and saved them onto a web page. When others indicated that having this information in one lo- cation was helpful, he decided to launch his “pick-your-own” sites (
PickYourOwn.org and
PumpkinPatchesAndMore.org) which offer information on agri-tourism, finding local farms for picking fruit and vegetables, and/or discovering pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hay rides and other events. His sites also offer related information, including creative ways to use what’s picked, such as canning, making jams, jellies, pickles, salsa, applesauce, and more. (
pickyourown.org/allaboutcan- ning.htm). Mr. Slemmer is currently gathering information for websites about farmer’s markets, honey sources, farm dairies, horses, maple syrup, the organic consumer, organic garden- ing, and community food events.
To find out more, or contribute information, J. Blake Slemmer can be contacted at any of the pick-your-own websites by clicking the feedback link.
