anosurf in Switzerland and Suzhou Haizisi (Hzs) Nano Technology Co. Ltd., a high-tech


company specialized in system solutions for na- nodetection, nanofabrication and nanometrology, founded a Sino-foreign Joint Venture, Suzhou Hzs Nanosurf Nanotechnology Co. Ltd., which after a preparation period of several months received its Chinese business license in the first half of August, 2011. The new Joint Venture represents a major milestone in the development of Nanosurf, which expects China to become one of the biggest markets for its products in the near future.


Located in the Suzhou Industrial Park (a Technology Park 100 km from Shanghai) and currently having a strong marketing and sales focus, Hzs-Nanosurf has all infrastructure and resources needed to become a strong Asian hub for the Nanosurf group. The joint venture will supply the full Nanosurf product ran- ge to customers in research, industry and teaching. Business is supported by a strong service, application and support center within the joint venture. “Having such strong resources in China will allow Nanosurf to gain a leading position in the research, industrial and teaching segments of this growing SPM market”, comments Dr. Urs Matter, CEO of Nanosurf.


Hzs-Nanosurf is already involved in a Chinese pro- gram to provide nanotechnology teaching solutions for high schools and universities. For this purpose, an optimized version of the renowned Nanosurf STM will be assembled at the joint venture and supplied to Chinese educational institutions.

anosys, Inc., an advanced materials architect, announced that the U.S. Department of Energy


(DOE) has awarded it funds to refine and bring to scale its SiNANOde™ materials for the automotive market. These innovations will enable Electric Vehi- cles (EVs) to travel 300 miles on a single charge. In addition to the primary DOE award of $4.8 million, approximately $6 million will be spent, through sub-awards and matches by the DOE and Nanosys, in the development and commercialization of advan- ced material technologies and manufacturing in the United States.


“We are honored the DOE has selected Nanosys for this grant,” said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO of Nanosys. “The future of a clean energy econo- my depends on increased adoption of electric and hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles. Until such vehicles are able to achieve substantial operating range on a single charge with the economics of combustion ve- hicles, acceptance will be limited to early adopters. The commercialization of architected material solutions like SiNANOde provide the breakthroughs needed to progress on the path to achieving those goals.”


The grant is a part of the DOE’s larger mission to accelerate the development and deployment of ad- vanced vehicle technologies through targeted pro- grams aimed at increasing vehicle efficiency. DOE’s comprehensive approach is aimed at creating new innovations throughout the vehicle, including high capacity electric vehicle batteries and components that should significantly exceed existing state-of-the- art technologies in terms of performance and/or cost. The agency has set a target for bringing the cost of lithium-ion batteries down to $250/kWh and incre-
