STATION EQUIPMENT

Britain’s largest station outside London, Edinburgh Waverley, is being refurbished. The arrival and installment of new glass escalators marks an important step on the way to improved access and protection from the elements, reports Kate Ashley.

T

he £150m revamp of Edinburgh’s main railway station is continuing, with the first set of escalators fitted in late August linking the concourse to a new exit on Princes Street. The remaining two sections are due to be delivered in October, with the escalators expected to be operational by Christmas.

The new entrance replaces the old steps that were in place, with the addition of a glass and iron cano- py to protect passengers from the wind. This will maintain access to Princes Mall shopping centre. The improvements are taking place in phases to reduce disruption to train services and the operation of the station.

Work to refurbish Waverley Sta- tion steps is part of a four-year scheme which also includes new

glass lifts, replacement of the glass roof panels and an upgrade of the Market Street entrance. Vacant buildings are also set to be demol- ished in the passenger area on the station. The entire refurbishment will be completed by 2013.

These improvements follow work to update the stations infrastructure to increase rail capacity, which was completed by Network Rail in 2008. This enhanced station access, and allowed more services to run.

Covering 23 acres, Edinburgh

Waverley is Britain’s largest train station outside London, accommo- dating more than 16 million pas- sengers a year.
