FLI Structures has recently com- pleted the installation of 20 OLE bases on the GE line.
The project was challenging, as most of the foundations were to be installed behind fragile Victo- rian retaining walls and the brief from Carillion and Network Rail was to avoid any surcharge on these walls.
The £110m upgrade of Stratford station in East London is now complete ahead of next year’s Olympic Games.
Part of the upgrade included an extensive new lighting scheme for the platforms, stairs and oth- er pedestrian areas, designed by consultants, Pinniger & Part- ners, who specifi ed an extensive range of lighting from Se’lux UK.
On the platforms, a total of 461 recessed single 58W luminaires
were combined with 265 stan- dard suspended versions to cre- ate continuous and segmented lines of light running the length of both platforms, providing bright, safe lighting levels with excellent uniformity.
In addition, for the areas under the higher canopies, a special di- rect/indirect variant was created, by reconfi guring the gear tray and installing a toughened clear glass panel to the rear surface of the profi le.
Secondly, the ground conditions were challenging, with a high wa- ter table and running sand in some areas. Thirdly, available space was very limited behind the retaining wall to position the foundations, especially as the foundations had to avoid retaining wall footings, adjacent footpaths and fences.
Finally work was to be carried out in possessions during day / night shifts, in a built up area where noise levels had to be minimised. Screw piling was the best and probably the only solution.
Getting the job done required designing bespoke screw pile foundations and building a large amount of fl exibility into the steel
grillages interfacing between the piles and the OLE structures, to allow the site teams to overcome any issues with buried obstruc- tions and services.
Tony Parker, sales manager at FLI, said: “With a strong focus on in- novation, we are able to supply foundation solutions to support a wide range of structures in the telecoms, railway, highways, civils and renewable markets.”
