PERMANENT WAY
Neil Gregory, director of GOS Tool & Engineering Services Ltd, discusses the company’s diversification and expansion. G
OS Tool & Engineering Ser- vices Ltd, the Blaenavon
based specialist fabricator and machinists, has over the last few years started to establish a foot- hold in a variety of new markets.
The company, established in 1966, is already well-known throughout South Wales and the West of Eng- land for a range of products and services including vertical boring, plasma and profile cutting, heat treatment and CNC machining in its traditional heavy steel indus- try, aerospace and petro-chemical markets. Recently, it has continued to diversify into environmental, waste handling and more recently several sectors of the rail market.
Although the company had previ- ously and continues to produce steel profiles and machined com- ponents for a number of suppliers
A significant development has been its agreement with Holland & Co, the Illinois-based flash butt weld- ing company, to completely manu- facture its range of All Terrain Mo- bile Welders (ATMWs) in the UK.
Based on the Doosan Dx170, these machines are not only being used in the UK but also exported to Tur- key and Australia.
in the rail industry, it was only in 2006 that it manufactured a range of fabricated concertina coil covers for rail wagons which represented its first significant step into rail.
Major projects since have includ- ed taking over the manufacture of a range of road rail vehicles, the Philmor range of rail trailers, con- crete and steel sleeper layers and a variety of grabs, fall arrest systems and footbridges.
Although the company has its own expanding design and development department, it is keen to establish itself as a major UK-based manufacturing hub and recognises the importance of co-operative agreements and alliances with regards to product innovation with the major road rail vehicle hire companies and also main contractors with regards to footbridges and steel structures.
Other developments include the manufacture of the Balfour Be- atty ‘Topper’ Ballast Regulator, a range of grabs and panel lifters for Network Rail, a fall arrest sys- tem for Cambrian Rail and bridges for TRAC Engineering and Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd.
