Work to pick the contractors on the Crossrail project is steaming ahead, reports Kate Ashley. T


he competition for the con- tract to construct the final


tunnel portal at Victoria Dock as part of the Crossrail project is un- derway, with the work estimated to be worth £50m.


Crossrail published the contract at the end of July and the deadline for expressing interest was August 24. It is expected that the contract will be awarded by spring 2012 and work will commence in the autumn.


Victoria Dock portal is one of five new tunnel portals to be built at part of the Crossrail project. The other tunnels will be at Pudding Mill Lane, North Woolwich, Royal Oak and Plumstead.

curement process for the remain- ing Crossrail tunnel portal is now underway. The contract for Vic- toria Dock Portal will be awarded next year.

The North Woolwich and Plum- stead portals are included as part of main works for the C310 Thames Tunnel contract. Ena- bling and mobilisation works are currently underway at Plumstead with utility diversion and ground clearance works ongoing at North Woolwich.


Enabling works for Pudding Mill


Lane Portal started over a year ago and are on schedule to be complet- ed at the end of 2011. Main con- struction for Pudding Mill Lane Portal is now underway.


Due to the close proximity of the Crossrail worksite to the Olympic Park, work on Pudding Mill Lane Portal will be suspended during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.
