CRIME PREVENTION
Network Rail has teamed up with RedWeb Technologies to collect evidence necessary to convict cable thieves and deter further crime along the railways. Kate Ashley reports.
N
etwork Rail has launched the use of new Forensic Taggent
technology to catch criminals red- handed when stealing cable to sell for profit. This innovative ap- proach will protect essential rail equipment by providing police with evidence that links offenders to the scene of the crime, it says.
Wakefield in West Yorkshire has seen 20 thefts over the past 12 months, leading to delays for pas- sengers and £400,000 compensa- tions costs. One particularly dam- aging theft caused eight trains to be cancelled, and delays on a fur- ther 108 services.
The equipment will now be marked with RedWeb’s Molecular Taggent technology, which contains a red dye that will remain on skin or clothes for several days. A further dye can only be detected under UV

Richard Lungmuss, the route direc- tor for Network Rail, said: “Cable theft continues to cause massive disruption to passengers and freight services. This is not acceptable.
“Britain relies on rail and the dis- ruption and delay has a significant
effect on people’s lives – through being late for work, missing ap- pointments or simply ruining a day out during the summer holidays.
“We are doing all we can to protect the network, including success- ful use of CCTV, extra dedicated police patrols and using various methods to make cables harder to steal. The use of the Red Web marker is another weapon against
“Technological and forensic advances such as Red Web are making
life more and more
difficult for thieves, and are increasing the opportunities for us to detect criminals.
“British Transport Police will continue to work hard to catch offenders in an effort to stamp out this problem.”

David Thomasson of Axis Communications discusses the need to ensure a safe environment for passengers in stations and across the rail network.
In
the surveillance industry, we are in the middle of the shift
from analogue to digital video surveillance – and what seemed impossible only a few years ago is reality today.
For many cities, it is of great im- portance to promote public trans- portation as a favourable commut- ing alternative and to attract more riders in their transit systems. To achieve this, it is essential that there is a secure environment for both passengers and staff.
There are multiple reasons for monitoring public transportation hubs where large amount of pas- sengers pass every day. It is all about creating a safe and secure environment by efficiently iden- tifying potential threats and stay- ing one step ahead of vandalism and crime. At stations, Axis Com-
