TRAINING
industry. Meade explains: “At the IRO, what we’d like to see is at some stage in the future our qualifi cation being recognised throughout the industry completely. So, it would be part of the job specifi cation: a requirement that an individual would have to have membership to the institution, or have done some form of training with us, whether it’s on the academic programme, or on one of our short course offerings.
“Obviously at a professional level, we are on a par with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, or the Institution of Civil Engi- neers, so obviously it’s part of their char- ters, the engineers have to have a qualifi ca- tion and that’s where our aspirations are.”
Gaining this accreditation would mean that the courses are more widely used; reaching out to more people, to provide a compre- hensive view of how the industry works.
“The whole point of the programme being developed at the outset was that we had recognised there’d been a lot of knowledge and experience lost at privatisation. The aim of the course is to give an individual a grounded overview and understanding of how the industry works.
“They actually get a complete picture, so rather than just seeing how it happens in their organisation, or even in their day to day job, they get to fully understand how the industry works.
“So overall the industry itself will benefi t because of the expertise and knowledge that the students will bring back to their organisations.”
Looking to the future New developments within the IRO in-
clude an operator’s handbook programme and an MSc for the academic programme, Meade explains.
“We’re hoping to have our operator’s hand- book programme launched early next year. We want to develop that away from the ac- ademic course because we appreciate that not everybody wants to get an academic qualifi cation. So it will be a series of short courses and with that they get CPD recog- nition as well.
“The other thing we’re hoping to have ready to go next year as well is an MSc (Master of Science) for the aca- demic programme.”
