Plasser & Theurer discusses its range of machines for mechanised renewal, installation and maintenance of catenary.
E
normous increases in productivity and huge savings in costs and time were achieved by the fi rst fully-mechanised cate- nary renewal machine operated by Swedish Railways.
In regular service, this produced a continu- al increase in productivity of a factor of fi ve, while reducing the staff by 50%. On Swiss Federal Railways the productivity gain achieved by the FUM 100.033 catenary renewal machine is estimated at 40%. On Austrian Federal Railways, there has been a reduction in staff fi gures by a factor of six, a reduction in track possessions from an average of eight hours to 2.3 hours and a cut in working costs of 60%. In the Neth- erlands, a FUM 100 achieved the record output of 6,000 metres of catenary system installed in a single day.
Latest generation machines
The latest catenary renewal and installation machines are generally equipped with two slewing and separately controllable winch tables. Mounted on each of these are four friction wheels, at least three of which are powered, and one hydraulically powered storage drum for contact wires and cables. These machines are also equipped with one telescopic lifting mast with roller heads per winch unit.

An example is the machines for renewal and installation of catenary on the Metro São Paulo. The FUM operated by Metro São Paulo is a rail-mounted catenary re- newal machine (FUM) and was specially designed for the installation of “fi xed sec- tions of catenary” in the tunnel.
The machine is capable of not only assem- bling longitudinal carriers and crossbeams on the tunnel ceiling, but also unwinding and winding-up the contact wire and car- rying cable. The assembly of carriers and guide rods on the tunnel ceiling is carried out from the elevated working platform
from the storage drums over the friction winches and roller heads of the lifting masts and placed in the correct assembly position with the fully adjustable tension- ing force.
To assure the necessary assembly accuracy and to avoid any deformation of the con- tact wire, all components of the system are designed to be moveable to the highest de- gree, particularly due to the straight line of the contact wire during installation of the wire. The constant wire tensioning force in all work situations is an important factor for the overall assembly quality of a cate- nary system. To ensure this, hydrostatic travelling and winch drive units are used in conjunction with an automatic start-up control regulated by a central computer.

The fi xed catenary sections are supplied from material wagons coupled to the ma- chine via the conveyor belt, adjustable in longitudinal direction, on the elevating table mounted on the FUM. Installation of the contact wire and carrying cable is performed from regulating storage drums using lifting masts and adjustable cable tensioning.
The FUM works in formation with the mo- tor tower car (MTW) and therefore is not powered (but is optionally available with separate hydrostatic working drive).
The work units of the catenary renewal machine are supplied with compressed air, electrical power and hydraulic oil pressure from a separate engine. During working operation the MTW-FUM combination can also be controlled from any position in the vicinity of the machine by remote control.
In addition to this, the MTW motor tower car is operated by Metro São Paulo other than in combination with the catenary renewal machine. The MTW is equipped with a crane, a catenary wire holder and an elevating work platform as well as a meas- uring pantograph for recording the lateral and vertical position of the contact wire.
