Successful kids TV series gets a brand new multiformat game. Dominic Sacco explains the Penguins’ popularity


NICKELODEON’S Penguins of Madagascarprogramme has netted millions of fans since it first aired in 2008, and THQ is continuing to satisfy that audience with its line of wacky video games.


Dr Blowhole Returns Againis the latest title in the series on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and DS. It boasts uDraw and Kinect compatibility, allowing gamers to use the devices to control the game in new ways. Fans of the show can expect to see all their favourite characters including Skipper, Rico, Mort, Private and King Julien, as well as the evil dolphin Dr Blowhole himself. Each character has its own strengths and weaknesses – for example Rico is perfect for detonating explosives, while Private can fit into tight spaces. The platform puzzle game lets players explore over 12 levels spread across three episodes,

climaxing with a fight against Dr Blowhole in his lair. Users will have to avoid hazards and obstacles while rescuing their penguin friends in order to progress. Gameplay consists of mini-games from bowling to dancing and ninja fighting, with players even able to create their own vehicles before racing with them.


With its huge army of child followers and family-friendly gameplay, Penguins of Madagascar: Dr Blowhole Returns Againis certainly one worth stocking for the younger gamer.

FORGET the bathroom cleaning product – Bleachis also a killer Manga franchise with over 65m copies of the comic sold worldwide. Although not a household name in the UK, it has cult status, with fans flocking to the MCM Expo dressed up as


characters from the series every year. Tecmo Koei is bringing the


hack ‘n’ slash franchise to PS3 in Bleach: Soul Resurrección, an action game that lets gamers take control of 25 playable characters. The story takes place during the same timeframe as the latest episodes of the TV anime and gives users the ability to wield special ‘Bankai’ and ‘Hollowfication’ powers. “Over 800,000 people watch the Bleachanime on Cartoon Network

and the DVDs have sold over 1.1 million units,” Tecmo Koei’s VP of sales and marketing Will Curley tells MCV. “The PS3 title gives all those fans the first chance to play a game that graphically does justice to the anime and Manga.” Tecmo Koei is marketing the game in Manga magazine Neoand using its own social network pages as well as


Manga’s UK channels to promote it. Attendees at the London MCM Expo in May had the chance to play the game, with a footfall of around 60,000 at the event. An exclusive pre-order offer with GAME will let early buyers receive a voucher to download Bleach episodes via an online anime service.
