Competitive & creative

Marina Egan–Ruane, Co-Founder of the Creative Academy, chats to IB about her life and inspirations.

Every day is different. Since we launched Shellac, our power polish, we have been very busy thankfully. So, I could be teaching a nail course, dealing with customers, stock taking, designing ads or packing boxes! You do what needs to be done which can be far from glamorous. People often think if you’re in the beauty industry you sit around having your nails done…I wish!

In your spare time I plan to get fit someday! I have two children - Zack is five, and Skye is 10 months old. So I don’t have much spare time, they keep me entertained and very busy. I enjoy going out for drinks and dinner with my husband Fin and friends when I can get a babysitter.

I worked in the computer industry selling and training with Apple computers for over eight years…I loved my job but wanted a new challenge. I have always been interested in nails from a young age. My sister Karen was a beauty therapist so I decided to do a complete career change and go into partnership with her and we set up Creative Academy. I attended numerous nail and beauty courses but nails and nail training were the areas that appealed to me most. The nail industry can be exciting as nail fashions change so much from season to season and year to year.

What I love about my job is the variety. It’s never boring. You need to love nails to be in this industry, and dealing with customers who all share our passion keeps you motivated. We eat, sleep and breathe nails here at Creative Academy.

In Cuba years ago friends and I chartered a boat to go diving with some of Jacques Cousteau’s crew. My friends had all dived before but I hadn’t…Wet suit on, just about to go into the sea, I enquired about the instructions?! They were less then impressed, but he still took me diving holding my hand all the time on the 30m dive. I now love diving!

Loving what you do is a great asset. I am competitive and very creative.

Like everyone who works in the beauty industry, I rarely get any beauty treatments done! I do get Shellac on my nails and am weaning myself off French manicure after 15 years wearing it.

I can’t live without my family and friends…And my iPhone!

Growing up, without a doubt my Mum Maureen was my childhood hero. She was a singer and a dancer in the Theatre Royal. She managed to do everything for her five kids. She was a great listener and friend. Even at 80, although she didn’t look it, she always had her nails done and was very glamorous. Sadly, Mum died very suddenly last year when my daughter Skye was two weeks old.

“The nail industry can be exciting as nail fashions change so much from season to season and year to year…”

My motto for living life is never mistake knowledge for wisdom; one helps you make a living, the other helps you make a life.

I would like to be remembered as a wonderful wife and mother, a renowned figure in my industry and someone who inspired people to fulfi l their ambitions.
